My fave spot in New Jersey closed down a couple of months ago and now I'm jonesin'.

I look for a couple of things when it comes to Bar-b-que, it's gotta be slow-cooked, and the food is better if they smoke it first. Big Mike brought me to Daisy May's and that was awesome, but their hours totally suck.

What do you guys think?

I luurve R.U.B. in Chelsea for authentic BBQ from K.C. pitmaster Paul Kirk.

The ribs are great, as is the pulled pork.
New York Times wrote:
RUB exudes the kind of tattered, utilitarian seaminess rarely seen in the tricked-up faux barbecue parlors of New York. The walls are devoid of decoration and painted a light ocher, the color of dried pig’s blood. The tables are made of dark beaten wood. The waiters wear monogrammed RUB shirts, and if you ask them for a napkin, they present you with a stack of paper towels.

The menu reads like a laundry list of delicious death foods (pork butt, burnt ends, deep-fried ribs, fried Oreos) from the nether regions of red-state America, and these specialties are served in unceremonious heaps on metal pie plates covered in wax paper, garnished only with slices of Wonder Bread and a scattering of pickle chips.

This setup may sound grim to some big-city diners, but to barbecue fanatics, it smells tantalizingly like the real thing. No wonder, then, that RUB is getting bull-rushed most evenings by crowds of barbecue-starved transplants from places like Houston and Memphis, dressed for dinner in their grimy T-shirts and sauce-stained coats.

(central new yorker) for those who are wondering....

yeah, and let me tell you-if you brought a scooter to the syracuse location, you would probally get your ass kicked. that place is way more hard-core than the manhattan location.

Where were the disappointing ribs from?

Were they... McRibs by any chance?

P.S. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I've tried RUB but find their ribs & brisket very dry and the sauce disappointing. Still like Daisy Mae's and Blue Smoke better - the meat is more moist. Your tastebuds vs mine, no right or wrong answer there.

However, I'm sure we can all agree on Dallas BBQ - ack, ptooie!

Oy! That place sucks SOOO bad. How dare they call themselves Dallas.
A true Texan would never eat that slop. They have no idea what a smokehouse is. It's nothing but lame rotisserie crap.

Speaking of "Oy!" there's this Kosher bar-b-que place in Teaneck NJ.
OMG it may be worse than Dallas BBQ. and that says a lot!!

Correction - went to RUB again tonight and found the ribs moist and yummy. At this point I have no idea whether that's the norm or an aberration. The pulled pork was pretty damn good too.

The sauce is still disappointing, though.

There was this place i sued to go to on MLK and they would think i was crazy just for going down there for ribs. they said that if i ever want them at night...call them and they will meet me on braodway in Fair Lawn so I didnt get my ass handed to me.

Freaken awesome guys

Hey, (somewhat O/T), anybody know where I can get Bubbie's pickles without joining the People's Republic of Park Slope Food Freaking Co-Op? The only pickles I've still been talking about 45 minutes later. They'd go good with great ribs.

Whole Foods.

http://www.bubbies.com/distributor_info.shtml

Kosher dills, however, are totally inappropriate with ribs. Generic supermarket bread'n'butter pickles and Wonder bread, that's what you want.

Go ahead, ask me where the name "bread'n'butter pickles" comes from.

Hey, there's a new kid on the block. Put a yellow sticky on this as a possible destination ride when the weather gets warmer...

Smoke Joint (nice name, too! heh.)

Daisy May's and Blue Smoke still topping the list for me. DM's got indoor seating now and expanded hours 7 days a week. BS is still overpriced, still has the same phony BS waitbots, and the ribs are still to die for.

Big Apple BBQ Block Party coming up - June 9th & 10th. I hope it doesn't conflict with the NYSC block party again - that kinda choice was brutal.

It won't. The Death to Gotham Rally picked that weekend already so the BlockParty will be another weekend.

Won't be the 23rd either 'cause that's the ApeDiem.

i don't mean to sound like a drunken frat boy or anything but i really enjoy Brother Jimmy's - i mean the food is always good and they have hot bartenders, PBR's and tallboy natural lights. It's prob not the most authentic bbq in the city but i must say i do enjoy it......

The last time Winston and I went to Daisy May's our tummies hurt afterwards. But that iced tea in the mason jars was so super good! :D
