Today, I took a few pictures of my back yard visitors. They were taken at an optical 30X with the Olympus 550UZ coupled with the 1.7 teleconverter.

First two were of Woody, right? What about the last two?? Is one in the Finch family?

The last one is a downey woodpecker, one up snowbird and two up is a tufted titmouse but I could be wrong.

I think it's the one in the top photo...that for some reason keeps on putting holes in my shed.

Now I know where Walter Lantz got the idea from.

This was the true inspiration for Walter Lantz. The Peliated is the size of a crow and is the largest woodpecker. I don't see them very often so I was thrilled when they paid me a visit.

The common crow. The most intelligent bird in these parts.

Perhaps you'll know if this is BS or not.

My brother used to tell me about a guy he knew...that would soak a loaf of bread with Vodka...then color it with Red food coloring. (all seems like a waste of good vodka to me)

When the crow's would land and eat the bread, they got hammered & couldn't fly. This guy would "supposedly" catch them, split their tongues and teach them to talk.

Could that actually work? Or was my brother just giving me a hard time?

that's a hilarious BS story
perhaps he's confused because Mynah birds can actually talk and some people think they're crows.

and now a cartoon about wildlife photography:

Vintage Fudd! What could be better?!

(And about the one prior to that, that seems like an awfully expensive way to "eat crow"
Sorry... couldn't help myself)

You don't need to split their tongues. Crows can mimic human speech without alterations. There was a crow that lived at the Turtleback Zoo that could say a few words. I was there about 25 years ago for a turtle society meeting and to help with the annual turtle roundup.

I found this squatter that took over one of my empty bird houses.

Amazing how smart squirrels are. They eat more of our bird seed than the birds. We have an electric feeder that gives the squirrels a shock. Most of the time it doesn't stop them. I'll take some photos next weekend in Ct.
