I could use some advice. I own a 2009 Vespa 250, it has about 7000 miles on it. I've owned it about a year and a half, and have done all the regular maintenance on it. Up until September, it ran beautifully...until one day I was riding on the BQE and it stalled out. I was able to restart it and drive it to the repair shop, but it was making a terrible thumping noise.

The shop took a look and let me know that the engine was permanently damaged, because it was not getting oil properly and it seized up. They've offered to look for a refurbished engine for me, said it would be cheaper than rebuilding my current engine.

Now its been 3+ months and they haven't found a refurbished engine, not that I'd be doing a whole lot of riding right now, but...how often do quality refurbished engines become available? Is there anything I can do to speed this process along? Am I correct to assume that normally when the engine goes, most people just scrap their scooters? Everything else on my scooter is in good working order, I don't want to give up on my scooter this quick.

I'm a little bit at a loss about what's the best next step to take, or should I sit tight?

You could call another vespa dealer(try all of them in the metro area) and let them
know you are looking for a used engine. You can search ebay, or Craigslist, Ive
seen many damaged(body damage) modern scooters go for a low prices.

None are listed locally, but occasionally Marlboro, NY will have a totaled out Vespa available where the engine would work well.

Hi thanks for those suggestions @mario @musicguy - I'll start looking around.

@porn-hair,
The oil light was flickering on and off for a few weeks prior. I didn't think much of it as I had just had all the fluid levels checked the month before. my scooter only has 7,000 miles on it, i've only owned it for the last 1,000 miles. apparently the guy who owned it before me, had the exterior completely replaced (twice) paid for by insurance claims, nothing with the motor or inner workings...not sure if that could've effected how things are working on the inside.

Also, in the few months prior i was having an issue with starting the scooter and it would stall out when it was cold...but never after it was warmed up.
