Many out of town visitors (especially those with scooters back home) ask this question in the hopes that they can experience riding a scooter in the Big Apple.

If anyone becomes aware of any new information, please post it here.

In addition, out of town scooterists are encouraged to post on this Forum about their visit and to swing by the Brass Monkey on a Wednesday evening... you might just join the ranks of other visitors who've successfully bummed a ride from a friendly NY-er with an extra helmet!

At the recent Dealer Expo in Indianapolis I spoke to the largest insurer of motorcycle dealers about rentals. He said they write policies in 48 states. New York was NOT one of them, due to the liability laws here.

Yes, it IS possible for a dealer to get insurance coverage for test rides - it just costs a fortune. As for rentals, if you find someone offering them it's highly doubtful that they're insured.

And no, I don't know what that other state is.

This information is from a thread dealing with test drives, not rentals, but it helps put the insurance problem into perspective.

I've mentioned this before but I'll explain again.

Dealers insurance policy premiums are weighted according to the lines they carry. Long proven brands where the manufacturer has a hefty product liability policy of their own are cheaper than lesser known, younger brands with less track record and where the manufacturer has less of their own coverage.

No name brands with a Podunk manufacturer with little coverage may be considered uninsurable.

Vespa's dealers pay more insurance than BMW dealers. Therefore they have to restrict certain types of policies to bring their premiums down to an affordable level.

The NYC area also has the highest premium levels of any area in the US.

The BMW dealer in Manhattan is a corporate BMW store. Read "DEEP POCKETS" here. They are not individually owned. FYI: motorcycle department is staffed by enthusiasts who all ride. It's a great place to shop for a BMW.
They can afford good insurance coverage that allows for test drives of properly licensed operators.
Most privately owned dealerships have to deal with garage liability policies that are barely affordable. We have not had a loss in many years and pay thru the nose. The rates are based on losses. They may not have liability coverage for test drives. They may not have liability coverage so that they can get dealer plates for test drives. Many times the more "substantial" manufacturers (Honda, Kawasaki, Harley etc) will cover the insurance for "demo days" at dealerships.
Being in the Honda business for 30 years, here is my experience:
1. Bob, who has purchased 4 motorcycles in the last 12 years walks in and wants to test drive the new Gold Wing. "Sure, sign the test drive release and come back in an hour."
BTW: We have dealer plates and insurance that covers test drives.
2. Joe, "Hi, I just passed my road test on my buddies old CB125. Can I test drive that CBR1000 today?"
We allow test drives when we know the client and know they are not a high risk. We understand that anyone buying even a 50 cc Metropolitan would be happier if they rode it first. We can't take the risk of having the rider injure themselves or someone else.
Then again I remember getting off of the ferry from Naples to Capri and seeing a huge sign: "Scooter Rentals! No License necessary!" We rented on for 3 days and had a blast.
Thanks for letting me share.

UPDATE

njrentascooter wrote:
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie on the forum here, but I came across it while doing a google search. I am the owner and founder of NJRentAScooter. We used to only rent in NJ, but we've gotten so many calls from people in NY that we've branched out into the 5 boroughs. :D We rent out HONDA (not cheapo Chinese) scooters for road tests and daily-monthly rentals. All the rates are on the website, and it is true that the rental rate is $50 per day. We can deliver them to you as well for $15 which is just to cover gas and tolls into and from the city to NJ. So $65 for a day including drop-off and pick-up. Payments are made with a credit card, and there is a $100 security deposit that won't be charged if the scooter is returned in the same condition.

We carry 50cc Honda Ruckus' and 80cc Honda Elites (two seater). To ride the 80cc you must have your MC license as it is considered a motorcycle under NJ/NY law. Yes, it includes liability insurance, but renter is responsible for all tickets and fines incurred while riding.

If you have any questions you can call us directly or shoot us an email.

Thanks,
Edwin

Thanks Brouhaha,

Scooter Rental Rates can be found on the website:  http://www.njrentascooter.com
Currently we carry the Honda Ruckus 50cc:

The Honda Elite 80cc:

AND due to demand for two-seaters, we have added Yamaha Zumas 50cc 2STROKE scooters to our current inventory. They have much more torque than the Ruckus, but a small amount of 2T oil needs to be added after every two fill-ups. Daily rentals need not worry as we maintain and inspect all of our scooters before and after delivery. However, for those visiting for weeks or months at a time (from California or Europe), it is necessary. :P

Soon in 2010, if not this year, we will be carrying Yamaha ZUMA 125 scooters for those wanting to scoot outside the NYC.

UPDATE:
JUST ADDED
HONDA REFLEX 250cc

Not scooters and not in NYC but:
Honda of Riverhead rents motorcycles by the hour, day, week.
For some bizarre reason the insurance company that covers the rental will not allow us to rent scooters. Seems counter intuitive.
Go figure?
